Super Bowl Commercials

On Monday 2/5/18 we watched super-bowl commercials, focusing on the target audience and persuasive techniques used to advertise the product. The three commercials that I found to be most appealing were the NFL ad, the Winter Olympics ad, and the Ice Mountain dew/blazin hot Doritos ad. The NFL advertisement targets teenagers and adults since they are most likely to get the reference to the scene they were recreating from the movie, dirty dancing. Through this technique they were able to capture the people's attention through humor and celebrity appeal since the people starring in the commercial have either been in the NFL before or are currently.

The next ad, advertising the winter Olympics used emotional appeal to advertise their product. During this advertisement it shares the story of a true Olympian "Lindsey Vonn" who had gotten injured and worked through her struggles to regain her strength, so that she could return to the point where she had left off. This choice of advertisement, urges the viewers to stay tuned for the winter Olympics to see how far this Olympian has come and see how well she performs. Also, this commercial used the technique of Synergy. Synergy was used because both the Superbowl and the winter Olympics air on the same channel, NBC. So by advertising this commercial during the Superbowl they are also gaining publicity for their own network.

The last Superbowl commercial that I observed for target audience and persuasive techniques was the food commercial featuring the new Doritos and mountain dew flavors. This commercial starred Morgan Freeman, and Peter Dinklage, so celebrity appeal was the persuasive technique they utilized. The target audience is targeted more towards an older generation because of the song choices, although older teens may be familiar with those songs as well. So overall, this commercial had a very wide appeal, appealing to both genders, and a wide range of ages.
